The super medium medium champions Canelo Álvarez and William Scull will hold a press conference tomorrow, March 6 at the City Music Hall in New York to begin promoting their indisputable 168 lb championship on May 3 in Riadh.
Way to Crawford
Scull is Canelo’s tuning to prepare it for its fight against Terence Crawford on September 13. Álvarez also needs Scull to capture his belt to hold the undisputed championship when he faces Crawford (41-0, 31 kos).
Thursday’s press conference will begin at 6:00 pm et. It is not clear how they will market the canyon fight for fans in the American Scull does not speak English and are not well known, and fans who know about him feel he is a champion alone on behalf. He is a belt holder and that is his only value.
On the billboard, the heavyweight contenders Martin Bakole and Efe Ajagba will fight. Depending on who is more on the card, that fight could easily steal the show. Canelo needs to intensify his game of his last two fights against Jaime Munguia and Edgar Barlaga. In both competitions, Canelo left after four rounds and took many necessary punishments against the contestants that David Benavés or David Morrell would have eliminated.
Retirement tour?
I hate saying it, but there is literally no demand for this fight. Turki Alalshikh should have put Canelo’s feet on the fire and forced him to fight someone who resonated with fans around the world instead of Scull.
Some feel that this is only part of Álvarez’s retirement tour to make sure he continues to win until his gloves hangs. Although the Cuban Scull is undefeated and technically the FIB champion, he looked worse than horrible, capturing his title with a unanimous decision victory of 12 rounds over Vladimir Shishkin on October 19 last year in Stadthalle, Falkensee, Germany.
Many fans, including this writer, felt that Shishkin deserved to win that fight. I saw Shishkin winning 10-2. Scull is slow, weak and has a low rate of work. How he looked in that fight, would have lost to the last two opponents of Canelo, Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia.
Having the four belts on the line will be one of the points of sale for Canelo-Crawford fight. It allows Crawford to try to become an undisputed champion of three divisions. Casual boxing fans will not care if there is a belt or four at stake for Canelo-Crawford fight, and unconditional fans do not see it as significant. It would be better if there were no belts at the fight for Canelo vs. Crawford. Make it an exhibition,
